Which Items Need to be Stored in a Climate-Controlled Unit? Part 2

July 27, 2017

You can get away with storing some items anywhere, but others require climate-controlled self-storage.

When you need the right self-storage near you in Ruckersville, there’s no better company to turn to than Store It Right & U-Haul. We offer a variety of storage units to choose from, and one of the biggest decisions you’ll have to make is whether or not you want a climate-controlled unit. While there are certain things you can store in any environment, other items require additional protection from humidity and temperature shifts, and should only be stored in a climate-controlled unit. In our last blog, we went over several items that need climate control. Here are a few more:

#5. Clothing

Are you looking for a safe place to store your coat, sweaters, snow pants or other winter gear for the summer? Or maybe you need to store your wedding gown or tuxedo. No matter what clothing you need to store, you’ll keep it much safer if you choose a climate-controlled self-storage unit. Maintaining the optimal humidity levels is essential when storing clothing, because too much moisture can cause the growth of mold and mildew.

#6. Musical Instruments

Musical instruments are incredibly sensitive, and when you are storing instruments, it pays to take extra precautions, which should definitely include choosing a climate-controlled unit. Here are a few examples of what excess humidity and temperature shifts can do to different instruments:

  • Piano – Pianos are made of wood, and since wood contracts and expands with changes in the temperature, storing a piano in a unit that isn’t climate controlled could actually end up changing the shape of the piano itself. Additionally, humidity can cause the strings to rust and the 15,000 joints in the piano to become unglued.
  • Guitar – It’s important to take extreme caution when storing guitars and other string instruments. High temperatures can cause serious problems with the adhesive and glue that holds these instruments together. Too much humidity can cause the strings to rust and snap as well.
  • Flutes – Flutes and other woodwind instruments should always be stored in climate-controlled units. If the humidity levels are too low, it can cause the instrument to actually dry out, but if levels are too high, it can cause the pads to expand and swell, and mold can start to form inside. Changes in temperature can also cause the wood to change shape.

#7.  Books

Are you an avid reader with a book collection that has outgrown your house? If so, make sure that you choose a unit with climate control when you put them in storage. There’s nothing like a well-stocked book collection, and if you want to keep yours safe, then protecting it from humidity is paramount. If you’ve ever seen what excess moisture does to a book, then we don’t need to tell you why it’s so important to store your books in a climate-controlled storage unit.
