Tips to Declutter Your Home

Is your home cluttered?

In our last blog, we identified a few signs that your home is cluttered. Clutter has a way of making our homes feel smaller and more chaotic, and we could all stand to declutter our homes a bit. However, decluttering is easier said than done, but with the help of the experts at Store It Right & U-Haul, it doesn’t have to be. Here are a few tips to help you declutter your home like a professional:

#1. Try the hanger test.

Is your closet stuffed full of clothes, but you keep all of them around just in case you might want to wear them some day? If you don’t wear something in a year, you probably won’t wear it, so a good trick is to turn all of your hangers so that they are facing the opposite direction. When you wear clothes, put the hangers in the right direction when you hang them back up. After one year, any clothes that are on hangers still facing the opposite direction are probably safe to get rid of.

#2. Fill a trash bag.

Many people have clutter in their homes that could be recycled, donated or simply thrown away. One great way to declutter your home quickly and without a lot of effort is to simply fill up one trash bag to donate, recycle or throw away every week. Whether you fill up your bag with clothes, old magazines, DVDs you no longer watch anymore or anything else, downsizing will make your home feel more organized and peaceful.

#3. Make a list.

Take some time to jot down all of the areas of your home that need to be decluttered. The projects on this list could be small and quick, like cleaning out the junk drawer, and they could be bigger, more time-intensive projects, like organizing the garage. Once you have your list created, pick one project every week to knock out. During busier weeks, you can tackle the smaller projects, and when you have more free time, you can move on to the bigger ones.

#4. Stick to the 80/20 rule.

As a general rule, most people only wear about 20 percent of their clothes 80 percent of the time, but this rule applies to more than just clothes. This rule could also hold true for DVDs, video games, board games, books, jewelry, shoes and so much more. Try downgrading to those just items that you use most of the time.

#5. Don’t forget about storage.

When people think of decluttering, they often think of donating or tossing items in their homes, and there are some things you just don’t want to part with, even if you don’t necessarily want them in your home.
