How to Safely Store Furniture

If so, you’ve come to the right place. At Store It Right & U-Haul, we are proud to be your source for self-storage near you in Charlottesville, but we don’t stop at simply providing you with the storage units you need. We are also dedicated to protecting your belongings while you store them, and that it includes your furniture. Furniture can be tricky to store safely, and that’s why our experts have come up with these tips to help you safely store your furniture:

#1. Choose a climate controlled storage unit.

There are essentially two basic kinds of self-storage units: units that are climate controlled and units that are not. Climate controlled storage units are typically pricier than their non-climate-controlled counterparts, but if you’re storing furniture, the added cost is totally worth it. That’s because large swings in temperature, as well as humidity, can warp and permanently damage your furniture. Although climate control is important for storing your furniture, if you choose to go with a regular storage unit instead, at the very least, make sure that there are no leaks and that it’s free of dust.

#2. Make sure your furniture is clean before you store it.

Before you put your furniture in a storage unit, thoroughly clean it using the appropriate cleaning products for the material. If you are storing a couch, chairs or other furniture with upholstery, take care to ensure that it is completely dry before you store it. Otherwise, this could lead to the growth of mold or mildew during storage.

#3. Cover the floor in plastic before you move your furniture in.

The last thing that you want is to go to all of the trouble of renting a climate controlled unit and preparing your furniture, only to accidentally damage the furniture as you’re moving it into your unit. Covering the floor in plastic is a good first step in preventing damage during the moving process. Not only will this help to protect both the floor and your furniture, but it also makes it easier to move the furniture in. Since furniture is often heavy and cumbersome, it’s smart to do anything you can to make it easier to move.

#4. Break down your furniture before you store it.

Furniture is big and bulky, but you can save a lot of space and hassle if you are able to break it down prior to storing it. Not all furniture can be broken down, but if it can, we highly suggest doing so. This will make your furniture much easier to move and store. If you decide to break down your furniture, make sure that you are very careful about where you store all of the nuts, bolts, screws, keys, locks and any other small parts and pieces you’ll need to put it back together. One great option for storing these odds and ends is in a zippered baggy that has been taped to the furniture. If you are worried about the baggy getting lost in your storage unit, you could store it in a filing cabinet, in a drawer or any other safe location — just make sure it’s labeled!
